SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH
BY HEIDI MCIVOR ALLEN
Every September, the observance of National Suicide Prevention Month brings together thousands of people and their communities in bringing awareness to suicide prevention and destigmatizing mental health. Next month, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get involved and support the cause, from attending suicide prevention training to sharing suicide awareness resources on your social media accounts.
You have the power to make a difference by learning about early warning signs of suicide, promoting crisis support resources, and being a person that your loved ones can go to when they are struggling mentally. Continue reading to learn more about National Suicide Prevention Month and how you can join McIvor Marketing in supporting people affected by suicide.
SUICIDE STATISTICS, WARNING SIGNS, AND RISK FACTORS
As the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, suicide is a major public health concern across the country. In 2022, more than 49,000 people died by suicide, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Men died by suicide 3.85 times more often than women, with white males accounting for 68.46% of suicide deaths in 2022.
EARLY WARNING SIGNS
- Talking about suicide, feeling hopeless, or having no reason to live
- New or increased substance use
- Social withdrawal and isolation from friends and family
- Extreme changes in sleep patterns
- Giving away prized possessions
- Displaying symptoms of anxiety or depression (or a sudden improvement in symptoms)
SUICIDE RISK FACTORS
Certain people or demographics may carry a higher risk of suicide, including veterans, people living in rural areas, indigenous people, LGBTQ+ people, and men over the age of 75. As National Suicide Prevention Month approaches this September, remember to check in with your loved ones who may be at risk, even if they don’t seem to display any early warning signs.
Here are a few other things you can do to spread awareness and help prevent suicide, both during National Suicide Prevention Month (and the rest of the year):
- Share resources and boost stories about warning signs, risk factors, and statistics for suicide
- Encourage open and candid conversations about mental health
- Don’t be afraid to share your own mental health experiences with others
- Challenge misconceptions and stereotypes that further stimatize mental health and suicide
- Promote the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline as an immediate support resource
- Participate in suicide prevention “gatekeeper training” to learn actionable ways to prevent suicide and support those affected by it
You can do all of these things…
- With friends and family
- On social media
- With colleagues or coworkers
- As a volunteer with a local or non-profit organization
