HARMONY IN NATURE: CULTIVATING GRATITUDE FOR WELL-BEING
BY HEIDI MCIVOR ALLEN
In our hyper-connected world, screens command our attention, and the demands of daily life seem never-ending. In an era dominated by technology and marked by the relentless pace of modern life, the importance of reconnecting with nature and embracing its gifts has never been more evident.
As we navigate through the chaos of modern life, the tranquility of nature provides a holistic remedy to the stresses and strains of our daily routines. In fact, fostering a deeper connection with the natural world and its wonders can enhance your mental health and help you discover a sense of serenity and balance amidst the chaos of the digital age.
WAYS THAT NATURE CAN IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL AND OVERALL WELLBEING
1. DECREASING NEGATIVE EMOTIONS
Currently, half of the global population resides in urban areas, and projections suggest that by 2050, this figure could escalate to 70%. While this urban migration may appear intriguing, its promise is overshadowed by evidence linking urbanization to heightened levels of mental health disorders, including anxiety and depression.
In a 2015 study by Bratman et al., participants were divided into two groups, each tasked with a 90-minute walk—one amidst lush greenery and the other through urbanized landscapes. Comparisons of physiological responses, self-reported questionnaires, and pre- and post-experiment brain scans unveiled significant differences.
Compared to individuals placed in urban settings, participants immersed in natural settings exhibited reduced neural activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex, a brain region implicated in depressive rumination. These findings support claims that increased exposure to nature can mitigate depression symptoms.
These revelations prompt a reassessment of urban planning paradigms, particularly in our concrete jungles. Access to nature and green spaces is an influential determinant of mental well-being. By envisaging urban environments that seamlessly integrate with nature rather than encroach upon it, we can rewrite the blueprint for urbanization to be both environmentally sustainable and conducive to our quality of life.
2. INCREASING FUNCTIONING AND PRODUCTIVITY
In today’s industrialized world, we have an undeniable fixation on productivity and efficiency, often driving individuals to seek out stimulants like caffeine or even resort to the misuse of drugs such as Adderall. While caffeine, despite its ubiquitous presence in our daily lives, is seldom recognized as a drug, it stands as the most commonly used substance globally, with the coffee shop industry thriving on a work culture centered around output.
However, the pursuit of short-term performance gains through such means is not without its drawbacks. Emerging research suggests that spending time in nature can significantly enhance work output without adverse effects. A study by Taylor et al. explored the impact of greenery surrounding residential areas on various aspects of cognitive functioning, noting a strong correlation between the presence of green spaces and improved attentiveness, particularly among girls.
In the 1890s, William James identified two distinct types of attention: directed attention and fascination. Prolonged engagement in directed attention, typical in demanding work environments, often leads to what he termed “directed attention fatigue,” characterized by distractibility, irritability, and impulsivity. Yet, the inherent allure of nature, described as fascination, offers a reprieve for the fatigued mind, replenishing its capacity for directed attention.
Moreover, exposure to nature has been found to stimulate creativity. In a 2012 study led by David L. Strayer, participants embarked on a four-day hiking trip, with results showing a significant increase in creative problem-solving abilities among those immersed in nature compared to a control group. Ultimately, these findings emphasize nature’s dynamic ability to enhance concentration, creative imagination, and recovery from mental fatigue.
3. HELPING BUILD RELATIONSHIPS
Experiencing mental fatigue after prolonged periods of sitting indoors, glued to a computer screen or engrossed in bookwork, has become a common affliction in modern society. Yet, the repercussions of time away from nature extend far beyond mere mental exhaustion.
In 2009, Weinstein et al. suggested that exposure to “non-nature contexts” can alter mental activity significantly. Weinstein’s research delved into nature’s impact on intrinsic and extrinsic aspirations; intrinsic aspirations pertain to goals fulfilling basic psychological needs, and extrinsic aspirations revolve around externally valued goods sought for recognition or rewards from others.
Participants immersed in natural environments reported a heightened appreciation for intrinsic aspirations and a diminished emphasis on extrinsic ones, whereas those exposed to “non-nature contexts” showed no change in intrinsic aspirations but demonstrated a preference for extrinsic goals.
The profound influence of nature on mental activity is further underscored by findings indicating that individuals exposed to nature-related imagery exhibited a greater inclination towards generous decision-making, while those exposed to non-nature imagery were more inclined towards greed-based decisions.
These pro-social tendencies associated with nature exposure suggest that nature can foster interpersonal relationships, promoting a sense of community among individuals and further enhancing personal well-being. This interconnectedness has the potential to catalyze societal improvement on a broader scale.
