Every September, the observance of National Suicide Prevention Month brings together thousands of people and their communities in bringing awareness to suicide prevention and destigmatizing mental health. Next month, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get involved and support the cause, from attending suicide prevention training to sharing suicide awareness resources on your social media accounts.

You have the power to make a difference by learning about early warning signs of suicide, promoting crisis support resources, and being a person that your loved ones can go to when they are struggling mentally. SUICIDE STATISTICS, WARNING SIGNS, AND RISK FACTORS

As the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, suicide is a major public health concern across the country. In 2022, more than 49,000 people died by suicide, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Men died by suicide 3.85 times more often than women, with white males accounting for 68.46% of suicide deaths in 2022.

EARLY WARNING SIGNS

To help prevent suicide, you need to be informed and aware of potential signs. People considering suicide may show changes in behavior or exhibit new behaviors, especially after a painful event, loss, or change. Some key warning signs to look out for may include the following:

Certain people or demographics may carry a higher risk of suicide, including veterans, people living in rural areas, indigenous people, LGBTQ+ people, and men over the age of 75. As National Suicide Prevention Month approaches this September, remember to check in with your loved ones who may be at risk, even if they don’t seem to display any early warning signs.
