OVERLAY ADS ARE COMING TO FACEBOOK REELS

Facebook Reels are becoming more and more popular and are constantly being made available to more and more creators daily. Facebook has announced that they will be testing out overlay ads on Reels to help creators earn money on the Reels they create. We are going to break down everything you need to know about overlay ads, Facebook Reels, and how you can earn the most money for your content creation.

WHAT ARE OVERLAY ADS IN REELS?

Overlay ads are a small banner-like or sticker ad that is placed overtop of content (in this case Facebook Reels). The ads will appear transparent, so they don’t obstruct the view of content. Users will be able to view the ad without interrupting the Reels content. If you see that an overlay ad has been placed over the content, you created then you will earn a portion of the advertising revenue!

Facebook Reels is testing out two types of overlay ads:

1. Banner Ads – these ads will appear as a semi-transparent overlay at the bottom of the Facebook Reel.
2. Sticker Ads – these ads will appear as a static image ad that can be placed anywhere within the Reel by the creator.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR FACEBOOK REELS OVERLAY ADS?

Creators who are currently eligible to monetize videos with in-stream ads for on demand on Facebook, then you are also eligible to monetize your Reels with overlay ads! The Reels that you are already sharing publicly on Facebook are automatically eligible for overlay ads. If you are not apart of the Facebook in-stream ads program, you can see if you are eligible to join the program!

HOW TO INSERT OVERLAY ADS IN FACEBOOK REELS

If you are already apart of the in-stream program (or used the links above to see that you are eligible to be apart of the program) then you’re automatically opted into banner ads in Facebook Reels by default. Not every Reel you create will contain a banner or sticker ad. The Reels that are chosen to contain overlay ads is dependent on several factors. These factors range from advertiser targeting-setting to the value of the ad for the viewer. If you no longer want banner ads to appear on your Facebook Reels, you have the capability to opt out in Creator Studio, just like with in-stream ads.

HOW TO UPLOAD A STICKER AD TO YOUR FACEBOOK REEL

Facebook will make the decision of what ad to display in the sticker ad frame you applied to your Reel. This decision will be based on what ads are best suited for the viewer. You need to keep in mind that just because you have inserted a sticker ad frame, it doesn’t necessarily mean an ad will be included.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Seeing that this is the early stage of Facebook Reels overlay ads and monetization, a lot is still up in the air and is dependent on how these tests go. The test will provide important feedback on the success of overlay ads on Facebook Reels, which will also improve the value of the ads for creators all over the world.

Since Facebook has recently invested $1 billion in creators, they are creating a plethora of ways for creators to earn money for their content. Creators can also earn money for Reels with the Reels Play bonus program. This program allows eligible creators to earn up to $35,000/month based on the number of views they receive on Reels that qualify for the program. Facebook’s main goal is to allow creators to earn a substantial income and b build sustainable businesses on Facebook through engaging content creation.
